Greek Food for Expats in the USA: Where to Buy Authentic Greek Products Online

You know what real feta tastes like. You know the smell of Loumidis coffee brewing in a briki on a Sunday morning. You know the difference between Kalamata olives and the generic black olives in a can. You know what Greek olive oil tastes like when it's actually from Greece.

And you know that almost none of what's sold as "Greek" in American supermarkets is the real thing.

The feta is made from cow's milk. The olive oil is a blend from multiple countries with no harvest date. The honey is glucose syrup. The coffee is nowhere to be found. For Greeks living in the US — whether you moved last year or your family has been here for generations — finding authentic Greek food is a constant, frustrating challenge.

This guide is for you.

What's Actually Hard to Find in the US

Let's be specific about what the American market gets wrong:

Feta

The feta sold in most US supermarkets is made from cow's milk. Real Greek feta — PDO-certified, made from sheep and goat milk, barrel-aged — is legally protected in the EU. In the US, any cheese can be called "feta" regardless of origin or milk type. The result is a bland, rubbery product that bears no resemblance to what you grew up eating.

Our Roussas PDO feta is the real thing: sheep and goat milk, barrel-aged, imported directly from Greece. It tastes like feta is supposed to taste.

Olive Oil

Greece produces some of the world's finest olive oil, but most of it is exported in bulk to Italy and Spain, blended, and sold under Italian or Spanish labels. The "Greek olive oil" sold in the US is often a blend with no harvest date, no producer name, and no polyphenol information.

Our Sparta Gourmet Koroneiki EVOO is single-estate, cold-pressed, with published polyphenol counts and harvest dates. It tastes like the olive oil from your yiayia's kitchen.

Greek Coffee

Loumidis Papagalos — the green bag with the red parrot — is almost impossible to find in the US outside of specialty Greek stores. We carry it. Loumidis Papagalos Classic Roast, 16oz, imported directly from Greece. The same product sold in Greek supermarkets.

Greek Honey

Greek thyme honey — the honey of Mount Hymettus, the honey your family drizzled over yogurt and feta — is rarely found in the US outside of specialty stores. Our raw, unfiltered Greek mountain honey is the real thing: wild thyme and herbs, never heated, never filtered.

Kalamata Olives

Real Kalamata olives — dark, meaty, fruity, from the Kalamata region of the Peloponnese — are completely different from the generic black olives sold in cans. Our pitted Kalamata olives in EVOO are the olives you remember.
